Moderate Flood Warning for the Norman River and Flood Warning for the Gilbert River

FLOODING OCCURRING IN THE LOWER REACHES OF THE GILBERT RIVER CATCHMENT

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT NORMANTON FROM LATE TUESDAY

Heavy rainfall in the upper parts of the Gilbert River catchment resulted in moderate to major flooding along the Einasleigh and Gilbert Rivers early last week, with flood peaks now in the lower Gilbert River downstream of Miranda Down. Areas of flooding may continue during this week as flood waters move through the lower reaches of the Gilbert River catchment and break out into Walker Creek.

Minor flooding is continuing along the Norman River at Normanton following a moderate peak last month. Renewed river level rises are occurring at Normanton as flows arrive from the upper Norman River, Yappar River, and Belmore Creek. Breakout flows along the Walker Creek may also elevate river levels at Normanton.

The situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.

A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Cape York Peninsula and Gulf Country.

Norman River

Major flooding is occurring along Lower Walker Creek at Burke Development Road. Moderate flooding is occurring along the Norman River at the Yappar River gauge. Minor flooding is occurring along the Norman River at Glenore Weir and Normanton.

Gilbert River

River levels are elevated in the lower Gilbert River catchment. Minor flooding is estimated to have eased at Miranda Downs.
