The storm hit Queanbeyan the hardest, where the SES was called to over 100 jobs. - ABC

Backyards in Queanbeyan and parts of Canberra have been covered with "golf-ball sized" hailstones and the roof of a supermarket has partially collapsed after a storm hit the region.

The intense storm, approaching from the south, hit South Canberra and Queanbeyan shortly before 5:00pm on Thursday.

It was heaviest in Queanbeyan, where some were forced to take shelter from the hail.

Queanbeyan SES said they were responding to more than 100 jobs, and that the roof at Queanbeyan Woolworths had partially collapsed.

Queanbeyan resident Kim told 666 ABC Canberra she was forced off the road when the storm hit.

"There's about 20 of us pulled into a petrol station to hide under the canopy," she said.

"It just hit ... it just came really suddenly.

"It's actually golf-ball sized [the hail], I haven't seen anything that big for a long time."

Shortly after 6:30pm the Bureau of Meteorology said the threat of dangerous thunderstorms had eased.

However it said further storms were still possible.
